Six Ways to Modernize Your Living Room

If your living room is so outdated that a box television with a rabbit-ear antenna fits in with the décor, it’s probably time to modernize. Updating your tired living room doesn’t take much work and if you make the right design moves, the results are pretty amazing. With do-it-yourself in mind, here are 6 ways to turn that dated living room into a design-savvy space.

1. Think Window and Floor Treatments

When it comes time to revamp your living room, it’s out with the old and in with the new window and floor treatments. Whether you’re updating your current home or shopping around for homes in Mission Viejo CA, a few new living room treatments will do wonders for any size space.

To break up the floor monotony, try adding throw rugs to your living room space. If you have a color palette already in mind, make sure the rugs include complimentary colors. Then, similarly spice up the room’s windows with complimentary window treatments to continue the modern look from the floor to the wall.

2. Modular is Modern

A cluttered room doesn’t do any favors for modern design, which is exactly where a modular mindset comes into play. Modular means using furniture and accessories to not only decorate and accentuate a room, but store the inevitable knick-knacks that go along with interior spaces, which is especially the case with the living room.

Instead of stacking magazines and remote controls on top of the coffee table, find form-fitting storage baskets to put all that clutter in and arrange those baskets under the coffee table. Likewise, streamlined shelving is great for odds and ends, so pick a convenient wall, put up some shelves, then arrange and de-clutter accordingly.

3. Create a Dominant Wall

In the world of living room hierarchy, something has to dominate the design of the space, especially if you want to achieve that modern look. So, choose one wall in the room and turn it into a focal point by painting it a dominant, yet complimentary color. This will make the entire living room pop without painting all four walls.

In your pursuit of wall dominance, don’t make the mistake of choosing bright, flashy paint. Even if a brighter paint brings out colors in the furnishings and other accessories, muted paint colors work just as well. Painting one wall the muted shade of a dominant color will really modernize your living room space.

4. Minimalist is the new Black

Just because your living room has four walls doesn’t mean you have to line them all with furniture and fill them with hanging art. In fact, the minimalist look is becoming more and more of a modern interior design mainstay.

To achieve a modern, minimalist look, use the de-clutter advice above and combine it with a simple living room layout approach. In other words, if you have four end tables, two loveseats, and six floor lamps, downsize your furnishings. In addition, try picking a muted color palette and follow through with it from the couch to the art on the walls.

5. Rearrange and Reinvent

A great way to add life and a modern look to a tired living room is by simply rearranging furniture and the room’s overall layout. By changing the layout of your living room and adopting a minimalist mentality, you’ll breathe new life and a modern flair into the space.

6. Colors Like Compliments Too

With all this talk about complimentary colors, it’s no surprise outfitting your living room with a complimentary color palette is a modern design choice in itself. Finding the blues, reds, grays, greens, browns, and so on in everything from furniture to window treatments is a great way to tie the space together and create uniformity.

If your couch doesn’t match the rug or your lampshades clash with the wall color, don’t panic. Switching things up in the accessory department will bring out the best in your living room, so swap those lampshades and change the throw pillows to something that matches the room’s existing palette.

By following the tips above, you’ll transform your old-fashioned living room into a modern living space without breaking a sweat.
