Haida Study by Joshua M. Smith
Earlier this year I began to watch AMC’s The Killing which was set in Pacific Northwest. One thing I kept seeing was Haida art which as a child I always enjoyed because it was simple yet creepy but told a story. While considering doing a little pasty white guy version study, I got a project from Red Bull to create some art for Steve Smith for his helmet and the request was Haida inspired art. Everything lined up and really enjoyed doing these pieces. There is a oddness with a me being a designer / illustrator from Florida doing something that has historical value and represents a culture. Hopefully I did this project justice since I have and will always respect the Haida.
The crest was developed for The Salvation Army.
