DESIGNING NEW MEETING SPACES, WITH NIEK VAN DER HEIJDEN
With design, for Niek Van Der Heijden (1981) it was love at first sight. It happened when he was still a child. His parents gave him his first tool kit and he thanked them and proceeded to saw to pieces the antique table in the living room.
To this day, Niek Van Der Heijden picks up pieces of human past through used furniture, creating new connections between them. An example is his bench-closet, which harmoniously assembles a drinking trough for cows and an antique chest that was about to be sold to a gallery owner. Two objects that are poles apart.
