Forest Gods – Fairies
In mythology fairies were primal creatures, forces of nature. Unfortunately few designs of spirits fairies and other magical beings reflect this. One of the best ways to reflect nature isn’t simply to use natural elements but to have something anamorphic.
The animorphic creature offers two advantages; first they look primal especially when drawn in a modern day setting which is important because if you are making a modern story it should be noted that suburbs and farmlands have replaced forests. Second animorphic fairies appear adaptable they can change as the world changes.
Of course sometimes traditional art is the best inspiration for fairy like creatures. I’ve been greatly inspired by the art of many cultures but I grew up primarily in a Yupik village where I learned to make masks and similar things. This often inspires my art, especially that which depicts fairies.
