Ernst Haas (1921 – 1986) is one of the world’s most renowned classical wildlife, macro and street photographers, as well as a pioneer of color photography. Throughout his life he shot at least 250,000 color stills and 100,000 black & white negatives have also survived him. It’s easy to figure out that Haas loved life in all its forms, simply by taking one brief look at his pictures. It doesn’t matter if their snapshots of wild horses in the desert, birds, baby seals, exotic native dancers, buildings in Venice, the waves of the ocean, macro shots of flowers or whatever else. If it was alive, Haas would photograph it in all its beauty. If it was beautiful, his skilled eye would definitely notice it. His work has been often compared with painting, for its incredible observance of aesthetic standards. However, Edward Steichen of the New York MoMA put it best when he said that there is no painter who can bring forth as much force as Ernst Haas.
