Artworks by Justin Gornall
“My early training was practiced mainly on my school textbooks, a habit I was to keep with me, during my short and unsuccessful academic life. The transition from
textbook to ‘scratch board’ involved much experimentation and frustration, resulting in finally, though not exhaustively, the marriage between acrylic paints, alcohol and
scalpels, incorporating my passion for mushrooms, and the fascinating brilliance of bones. Pastels compliment the somber tones of the scratch boards using a very limited
pallet of colours, often themselves superimposed and concluded with pastel pencils. It is more a question of burnishing the paper and finding forms which just seem to
present themselves and are more often then not hidden within the main structure of the drawing/painting. It requires some work from the viewer, not only to discover these
forms, but to also add to them with their own imagination.
I live and paint in the Luberon, France, exhibiting in Paris and Sweden taking my subjects mostly from the countryside and the forests of Sweden.”
